I loved the idea of this scarf I saw at the GAP. And its super simple to make and will cost you $3 instead of $20, which is always a good thing. To make your own:
- Buy a yard of plaid lightweight fabric. Mine is from Joann’s (in the homespun section by ginghams, it was 4.99 & on sale).
- Square up the sides and cut the yard in half so you have two 16-18" pieces.
- Sew them together so you have one big length about 85" or so long, I left the length of mine and its perfect….but I’m also a giant so you might need to trim yours.
- Now sew around the whole thing about an inch or so from the edge. This keeps the fabric edges from fraying too much , although you could probably skip this step unless you wanted to wash it a lot and keep it forever.
- Lastly you fray the edges. I cut the edges of mine like you would a rag quilt, about every 1/4" or so and then washed it. The effect was just as cute as the GAP one and way easier.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and survived the shopping madness. And by the way I finished unpicking my quilt, it didn't take me as long as I thought it would and I'm happy to say I LOVE it the second time around. :)

cute scarf ! I always love to see new ideas to try :)
super cute scarf ... though I'm really afraid to brave Joann's until after this weekend
That is CRAZY easy... and would make awesome gift wrap too!
It looks fabulous!
What a great idea for gifts, thanks!
Glad to hear the unpicking went so well. Guess it goes to prove that persistence pays off, because you're so much happier with the way your quilting turned out.
Really, really cute scarf. Love the fabric you choose. Thanks for the idea!
So clever!
Very cute! and so easy! Thanks
Very cute! Might have to try this idea.
I saw these at Gap and was going to try it this week!
this is gorgeous and such a great idea...thanks for the tutorial
I love your version! I should have read this post sooner. I was in Joann's today...
WOW!! I never thought of that before. I have wanted an orange plaid scarf that I saw in GAP, but when I went back it was gone.
I'm going to Joann's next week!!!
Thanks for sharing!
I saw these at GAP yesterday too. Thanks for the info. These would make great Christmas gifts.
Thanks! I have lots of homespun and needed some ideas!
This is the second simple scarf I've seen all week. Maybe I'm being told something...
love it! i wear the same two all the time--perhaps I need a third.
Awesome -- you are the best! I'm definitely going to make one of these this week!
great (quick) gift idea - thanks!
Super cute! I like my scarves long too. Not because I'm a giant as you so cutely stated, but because I'm a little....ahem, top heavy. :) I love copying things I see in the stores, you did a great job!
I'm going to try this with a yard of homespun I found at Walmart yesterday for $2/yd on clearance! It's a yummy orange plaid. Saw it at another WM store for the same price today. Thanks for the great idea and how-to!
Such a cute scarf! I have some linen that I think will be a great scarf, even though I'm confused about what weather I'm supposed to be able to wear a lightweight scarf in :) - maybe it's just the Virgina weather that still has me confused!
That's beautiful! Thanks so much for the great idea, I'll be linking.
I can think of two little girls who will be receiving scarves for Christmas - thanks for the idea.
You did a great job on this - plus, it looks way cute with your jacket. Here's a question, though: After you cut the edges (for fraying purposes) and wash the whole thing, do you go back and trim the frayed edge to an overall short(er) length to make it neater?
When I made a little tester-outer rag quilt top recently, I tried the cut-every-quarter-inch method and washed it. After it came out the the dryer, my poor little guy looked like it was having a bad hair day! I fixed things up a bit by trimming, but it still looks nowhere as neat as yours.
Ack! Am I just fray-impaired, or is there a secret?
I checked this out on the Gap website - awesome!! I'm a scarf fanatic....fun, fun!
Awesome!!! (And I just got some plaid fabrics in the mail yesterday...)

Thanks for the great idea and tutorial. I modified it just a bit for our (very cold) North Dakota weather.
