My "quilt" closet:
It’s a tiny weird closet in right outside my bedroom and STUFFED with mostly quilts. Plus there are some in my buffet:![]()
And I won’t even show you the tubs in the garage…yes the garage. And this doesn’t even account for the quilts being used around our house…which is a lot. Gulp. I have a lot of quilts. I always feel a tinge of guilt when I start another one….like why in the world do I keep making these? But… I love making them, and honestly its more about enjoying the process than having the finished quilt. If all I wanted was a quilt then by golly I’d go buy me one (this one to be exact). So here’s to more quilts…and feeling a little guilty but doing it anyways. And to eating a whole pack of donut holes…and not feeling guilty at all.

Oh, I aspire to have that many quilts. I'm a "what mood am I in" and that's what determines which quilt I pick to cuddle with or coffee cup drink my coffee with, kind of person. THat many quilts would give me so many choices.
As for you, you enjoy making them, the family enjoys using them and other than the need for a larger house one day to store them, I see this as a complete win-win! lol
I love it. I tend to work forever on them and then give them away. So I love you have so many around.
Beautiful! If I had a quilt closet like this, I would smile every time I opened the door. I was starting to feel a little guilty for making 5 quilt tops in the last few weeks. Now I just need to actually quilt them!
Wow. All that beauty in one place. :o)
I could take some off your hand if you want ;)! I goggle over quilts but have never managed to make one :)
Oh my gosh, it's like heaven! When I die, I want to go to your quilt closet.
Oh I hope some day to have that many quilts. Right now I'm just trying to make as many as I can to keep my household warm and it's pretty much assumed that EVERYONE wants a quilt for Christmas next year.
Wow, I can't believe you have so many still in your house! What fun. I tend to make all of mine for other people, so I don't have very many at home at all. The kids each have their baby quilt and toddler bed quilt, and we have three lap/throws around in the living room, and that's it. For now...
It makes you happy, you make your family happy...I say keep doing what you are doing!
I have always wondered why people ask me, "What are you going to do with this quilt?" As if I am suppose to be giving it to someone or thing just because I am making it!!! My reply is, "I am going to keep my quilt until I no longer want it because I do not need reasons to make them." Love, love your quilt collection and wish you many more. Judy C www.shadetreequilting.com
And the best part of all is that they are all completed!!
You know I would buy that very same one too. I just laughed when I saw it, it is obvious isn't it, but isn't it so wonderful to create your own (though I was extremely tempted to buy that quilt)
After completing The Grandbaby Quilt Project in time for Christmas, I am now making quilts for me! I want to have enough so that when the extended family visits and kids are sleeping all over the floor in the living room... that everyone in the house is sleeping under a quilt I made!
Love seeing all your quilts.... so beautiful!
I used to feel guilty as well-which is why I've donated quite a few of mine. However, this is the year of "me" quilts, so I'm making a bunch for my bed, to snuggle with, etc...that's the best part of the quilt!
I love that you don't feel guilty about the donut holes! That is my weakness... donuts and quilts! Don't have as many as you, b/c I give them away, but you inspire me to keep some and not feel guilty about it!
You are so talented!
Wow what a wonderful collection of quilts! You shouldn't feel guilty.
Well when you run out of room, you just start giving some of them away. Gives you more reason to make more to refill the closet or the buffet.:D
Now I don't feel so guilty about my quilt closet. Checked out the quilt at Pottery Barn---too cute. Saw the $59.99 price and then realized that was the sham. Cute idea for the sham though, think I will print for future use. Your quilts are better!
oh my god wow how can someone have so many quilts and not using them, amazing, love them all they are wonderful
Why don't you put some of those in your Etsy shop? I'm sure we'd be happy to take them off your hands :-)
goodness me!, why not sell them? It will give you money for more fabric..on the other hand I do get quite attached to my quilts so I can understand any reluctance
I had hoped you would post pictures of the quilt closet! Thanks for sharing!
Love it! Just think if your whole house ruins their bed linens in the middle of the night you have it covered! I have a mild obsession with cotton...everything cotton. Quilts, shirts, drapes..etc. I LOVE cotton...lol!
that is a whole lot of gorgeous quilts...i am envious!!! they look so pretty all stacked up together.
Hahahahaha! Those are amazing and I'm so happy you shared them with us! But I am definitely laughing at your quilt hoarder confession. They look amazing. It's rare to find such a talented quilter who gets to enjoy her own quilts without always having to sell or give them away. This is the first year I finally got to make one for myself. I covet it. Keep on quilting and don't feel guilty! You are so good at it and we love to see them.
wow! I am envious of all the quilts. I'm struggling to just get one finished. It does get easier the more you make, right?!
It's lovely to have so many to choose from! I'm so jealous!

very fun! I can't wait until i have a closet of quilts :) in the meantime, i just give them away.

OMG ... they are all so beautiful ... do you use them? take a few out, put a few away?
Don't worry about having so many. Sewing is therapy and at least you have a quilt when you are done ... what would you have after paying for a round of golf???
Please let me assuage your guilt by taking a few off your hands. :). You CAN'T stop making them!
wow..open those beauties up and have a quilt show for us!!
They all are beautiful!
Don't you know "busy hands are happy hands"? I like best that you have them in the buffet. Mine are folded at the foot of every bed, have given 7 as gifts in the last year and have 30+ stacked and waiting to be made. Some are actually hanging in a closet and now my goal is to convert the china cabinet to a "quilt cabinet" - they just have to be seen!!! Thanks as always for the inspiration.
Wow, what beauty! You should sell some of your quilts. Set up an etsy shop and make some money! Those quilts deserve to be loved (by me!!).
Shut the front door, these are SO beautiful!!! Don't feel an ounce of guilt, sister! Keep on, keepin' on! :)
Thanks for sharing your "dirty little secret (closet)" :)
*drool*
completely envious. (and not just because they are beautiful, but also because i live in minnesota. where you can never have enough quilts)
I am SO jealous! I haven't kept 1 quilt that I have made yet (my poor children don't even have one!) but I have given a dozen away in the 2 years I have been sewing. Your closet is beautiful!!
Start giving them away. . to friends, family, neighbors, and me!! haha
Someone needs to do a giveaway day...
What a wonderful sight! And if you get too full and need to make room you could always sell a few!
Gosh, don't ya just want to unload a few of those on me to make some more room? lol
Hugs
Julie
Love your quilts and your philosophy, too...
; )
I'm slightly jealous. I tend to make quilts and then give them as gifts or sell them on the etsy shop. Of the hundred or so quilts I've made, I've only kept four. I think it's time to build up my stash. My house doesn't give any indication that I'm even a quilter. Here's to selfishness...in moderation. :-)
you know, if you're gonna accumulate a collection of something, I always figured handmade quilts beat baseball cards or stamps by a mile! :)
They're beautiful - enjoy, guilt-free. (
Love the red, yellow and orange together!
Top quilt, left side.
Beautiful! My "take" on it is that our hobby is cheaper than psychotherapy, and healthier than drugs LOL!
*swoon* so jealous right now. I am bookmarking this as something to aim for ;) you have so many beautiful quilts!! I need a pile of quilts around my house too. Just because. I tell the hubby it's cheaper to redecorate with quilts than it is to redecorate and buy new furniture :)
I LOVE your quilt collection.
I have two that were passed down from my husbands aunt, two that my grandmother made and two that are about 50 years old that need backs. Now I have made my very first one to add to the collection. But sadly I don't want to use them because I love them so much I don't want anything to happen to them
It might be neat to find a charity to donate them - perhaps a home for women who have escaped abuse and need items to set up their new homes.
Oh my goodness! I would love to just have one shelf from your closet! Your quilts are beautiful...and I'm jealous! Now I wanna go home and quilt! Thanks for sharing!
Holy cow you have a lot of quilts. I think you should start having a trunk show all over the country to show case them. Isn't the closet outside your bedroom an actual linen closet?
I have a lot of quilts too! In fact, I'm running out of stash room. I think I gave 8 away as Christmas gifts this year, to free up a little space, and it makes me feel good when I give them to really good friends and family. I also have people ask me what I'm doing with the quilt I'm making, or binding...usually say don't have a plan for it, just making it...guess they don't understand why you don't have a set purpose for making it...because I like the fabric, pattern and want to...Keep on making them if you enjoy it.
I would love to have a giant quilt collection too! I'm a definite beginner and only have two so far...and two I'm not very proud to show off!
You should make your own Pottery Barn quilt. That looks just like Denyse Schmidt's Single Girl quilt pattern!! I've been eyeing that pattern but need to wait until I have a little more quilting experience under my belt!
Well, not to brag, but I'm an incredibly thoughtful, selfless person....if you ever run out of room in your home, if having a trillion amazing, beautiful quilts ever starts to bug you and keep you up at night, I'll allow you to send me one.
I know, I know: I'm being way *too* helpful and and accomodating in my willingness to take them off your hands, but I'm just that kind of good person.
;)
If you would like to get one of them off of your hands I would love to help. I love the colors in the one that is bottom left of the hutch..right in the middle. :) light blue and greenish colors. What is the fabric?
I keep making quilts to give away, but have never kept one for myself! I guess we have opposite issues... Love your work!
I wish I had so many just to love. But I give them away. My husband is always giving me a hard time about that. But I cant seem to help it.
I have three or four that are mine. But I need to make more, just for our home.
Your quilt stash looks amazing to say the least! They are all so beautiful.....do you rotate them? Do they all get a turn at being used around the house?
That closet IS tiny AND weird. At least it looks cute stuffed full of super colorful Allison quilts!!
I can't even imagine keeping all the quilts that I make. In fact I have one. The very first one that I made about 25 years ago. When I started quilting again a couple of years ago my husband asked with each quilt, "what are you going to do with that one?" and I have always had an answer. Give this one to my daughter, this one to my son, give this one to a new baby, give this one to a dear friend, give this one to my MIL and so on. This way I can sew, sew, sew. Try many new patterns, use lots of beautiful fabrics but I don't have cupboards and bins stashed full of quilts that aren't being seen and loved and used. This method actually makes me husband happy and excited about my hobby. Opening your closets would bring such smiles!
I do have a few quilts planned that I will keep - one for the back of my couch. I'd love one for each season but we shall see. One for my bed for the summer. A few seasonal wall hanging quilts for my dining area.
Oh wow! I am so envious, I have been quilting for only a short time and only made cot, lap size so far. I have even joined a quilt class, it's all hand sewn, I wanted to learn how to do it the old fashioned way so I can then learn how to adapt it to how I want it. It's a really enjoyable process, my daughter wants a quilt making to take to university this coming september, how can I refuse!
And they are all so beautiful! I have three in the works. I just wanted to say you had to say donut holes. Now I want some donut holes! :)
How do you afford it? Looking at all those quilts....quilting fabric around me is $8-10 dollars a yard. Really, how do you afford it? Please give some secrets.....
Oh my, I love, love your pics!!! Ooohh la laaa!! And I absolutely love your quilts!!!! And your wonderful blog too!! :)) I would also be more than happy to get one or two.. or three!! ;) Keep blooming, you amazingly talented lady of quilts!
Kuddos to you! I love it! I consider myself a beginner and I tend to give everything away - The next quilt done . . . I'm holding onto! And maybe one day I'll have a beautiful stack that we all can cozy into. Love your talents thanks for sharing.
Whoop! If you are in a blizzard like I am, you'll stay nice and warm!!! I love it!
Oh, how I hope to have a closet like that AND totes full of quilts I've made some day. Right now most of what I make goes as gifts. I am starting to keep one or two for myself. Would you ever consider giving one away for a good cause? My brother-in-law is fighting(losing) esophageal cancer and we are having a benefit which includes an auction. We'd love to have even what you think is your worst quilt. You can see info about it here:
http://daleholtapp.blogspot.com/
I love it!! I'm well on my way to joining you in a 'house made of quilts". Will you join us in the Single Girl QAL?? Please?
Silly girl, you could make that Pottery Barn quilt in no time at all!
It's called Single Gal:)
My thought exactly. Why don't you make the Single Girl quilt? It is gorgeous and there is a quilt along. It'll be fuunnn!
We live in an RV and I don't even have a closet that big or a buffet, and all my "stash" is outside in 2 tubs or a basket that sits on the chair next to mine at the dining table. Thread is stashed in every cubby, and under the sofa.
The only "quilt" I've kept is 2 placemats that I use (under vinyl, 'cuz I like 'em to stay PRETTY!) - everything else gets given away.
But, even here in South TX, it's getting COLD! And I just gave my neighbor my heaviest blanket to put over his plants, so I guess I'd better get going on one to keep! :)
Wow, would my husband be jealous! And yes maybe have a give away with one you are tired of. You are very lucky. I have enough fabric to make that many, I just have to get to it! Thank you for your blog. I love it!!
Mmmmmm.... quilts.... I just love the piles and piles of gorgeous color! I need to get after my stash and join in the quilt closet party! :-)
~Angela~
AUUGHHH You are so Lucky!! What a wonderful Closet!! Or make that Closets... Such a Collection, your Children & grandchildren will love to 1 day have these handed down to them. What treasures they will be. You should Take photos of every quilt & put it in an little album with a note or a story or scraps that your grandkids etc someday can get a look into your world & the love that went into what your did. Maybe one of them will be a future quilter?and it will mean alot. ((HUGS))
Just want you to know I LOVE your blog and all of your wonderful quilts too. That pottery barn quilt - sure it's ok but nothing as special as one you made by hand! I say the more the better!
Hello! Is that fear or not...ok it's fear, I just have to make more quilts! Honestly I see first time that first quilt in your first photo! My "PicNic" blanket is so similar - I want to make another one with different colours! You have sooo sooo much wonderful fabrics, ideas, patterns...even that adorable huge roll wadding material! Thank you so much for INSPIRATION!
Sunny wishes from Finnish woman living in Crete! Teje
....sorry my English...I ment fair! Teje
I want to wrap up in one right now!
Please, please I beg you to warm up the world with your beatiful quilts by donating them to a worthy cause. You can't help yourself from making them...me either. But take some pictures and then spread that love around!
I was so happy to see this post a second day, gives me more time to OOOOO and Ahhhhhhhh!
This is equally awesome and crazy ;) Love it!
here here! i get the same exact feeling and i am only a beginning quilter with two qults so far. maybe mine is actually different because i keep buying the fabric for the new quilts and the list is getting quite long.
Those are the most wonderful closets ever!! And yay to eating donut holes without guilt!
I think you should start sending those wonderful quilts out to your faithful followers-just to make room for more:)
I certainly can understand why you'd want to keep those all - they are absolutely gorgeous!
But if you do have some that never see the light of day that you are less attached to, I recommend donating them to Project Linus. We received a hand crocheted blanket from Project Linus when my son was in the NICU - there is just something inexplicably heartwarming about receiving a blanket that someone took the time to make by hand to give to your family.
That is a happiness cupboard!
And for all you quilters who are always giving them away... I'd be happy to take them off your hands. ;)
ohhh! No quilt guilt, please! It's gorgeous eye candy and I can't wait for the day that I make that many quilts and hopefully as beautiful as yours! :)
Absolutely spectacular! I am very jealous! I have gotten up enough courage to begin a quilt yet.
what an absolute treasure trove! I'd love to be able to open a closet in my house and see a stack as beautiful as that by my own hand. Lovely. And since I don't quilt (yet) I DID buy that Denyse Schmidt PB quilt a couple of weeks ago with some money that I'd been saving. With just a little bit of guilt. But I got over it. And I LOVE IT.
Your quilt closet is lovely. So bright and colorful! And did you know that the quilt you linked as in the one you would buy is the Single Girl quilt and there is a quilt along starting Monday for that one? I just joined it myself. They have a flickr support group for it starting up too. I'm sort of scared of all the curvatious cut outs but I think it will be fun and it is such a beautiful quilt. I have a link to the quilt along on my blog www.silverlilysews.blogspot.com:)
