This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the small stuff.
About how I need less "sweating the small stuff" and more forgetting about the small stuff that makes me feel guilty during the day. My small stuff for today:
- I didn’t eat one vegetable. - I keep meaning to make a good meal list/grocery list/ and actually make meals. - Ben watched cartoons for way too long this morning. - I haven’t exercised in a long time. - I didn’t fold the boys laundry so now its all dirty again. - I took 6 pictures of quilts today…and 0 of my kids. - There was grape on the floor and instead of bending over to pick it up…I kicked it under the fridge. - If I have to play Play Dough one more time this week I’m going to throw it all away when the kids are asleep. - I forgot to brush Ben’s teeth two nights in a row (and I’m a hygienist). - I wore my yoga pants (I don’t do yoga) two days in a row…all day. - We really need to start budgeting more. - I said I wasn’t going to eat out this week…but then I made a wrong turn into the Jimmy Johns drive through.
You get the point…it goes on…and on…and on. So silly isn’t it? And such a big fat waste of brain space. I’m making a commitment to work on it once and for all.
But in the mean time…I went on a sewing rampage last night and finished this top. I think its the fastest I’ve ever made a quilt (and stayed up late doing it). But I love it…and its one thing I don’t feel (too) guilty about. So here’s to positive thinking…and Jimmy Johns.
*After reading some of your comments I really really don't want you to think I'm complaining or that I want you to feel sorry for me...no way hosay. I was just sharing some of the silly thoughts I waste my time worrying/feeling guilty about. :)

I love the first quilt with your son in the basket. What fabric line is that?
First, that quilt top is... I don't have an adjective good enough, but WONDERFUL, beautiful, perfect! I want it. :)
Don't feel bad. We've all kicked grapes under the frige.
And now I want Jimmy Johns...
That quilt top is so fantastic. I love the gray and white polka dots with the DS quilts and the red and white dots--really helps pull it all together! Gorgeous! (And yes on the guilt trips/negative thoughts. They are constant, but so unproductive!)
oh dear, I ticked off about 95% of that list. Don't worry too much. Kids are happy and safe and loved. Guilt is, as you said unproductive. Do what makes you and your family happy.
No need to feel guilty...humans are not perfect, but your quilt sure is!
I am glad I am not the only yoga pant wearing multiple days in a row guilt trip momma:)
I used to guilt trip myself almost constantly. Like you said, it's very unproductive and only makes you feel worse.
It really is a conscious effort to keep those yucky thoughts out of my head, but it gets easier with time. Sometimes they do creep in from time to time though.
I'm sure you're a great mom. We can't be perfect all the time.
Okay, lets not talk about what is under, behind or inside my fridge. We can be so hard on ourselves. Your quilt is amazing and that baby doll of yours is too cute for words!
rest assured,we all are like you. and I recommend tossing the play dough though. You'll save yourself lots of frustration, clean-up and hassle later! I got rid of all of ours and I'm a much happier person now! (oh and I've totally turned into my mom! I swore when I was a kid I'd let my kids play with play dough as much as they wanted!) And I love your quilt, it's beautiful!
I have never kicked a grape under the fridge-only because I never thought of it!
Guilt is a wasted emotion. I think someone great said that, but I don't remember who! Do what you love & love what you do! (I think another great person said that, but I still don't remember who!) Hmmm-don't know Jimmie Johns-guess there is no franchise here. We love you, so smile!
LOVED your post! Too funny! Love the new quilt! Keep smilin' and don't sweat the small stuff!
P
Oh, I love this (as usual). You have such a knack for putting fabrics together - will I ever get the hang of it! This quilt has been on my list for a while. I think I'll move it to the top of the pile after seeing this. Oh yeah, let go of the guilt - it does no one any good.
LOL...you crack me up! Kicking a grape under the fridge instead of picking it up is something most of us have done in our lives, but we wouldn't admit it outloud. LOL!!! By the way...I love the quilt top and the colors! You can put together an assortment of colors I wouldn't even think of doing and the outcome always looks terrific. Great job!
i feel that way all the time... it's just something that comes along with being a mother. i just hope in the end i did the most important things on my list but how do you figure out what those are... lol! pray i guess!
beautiful quilt!
I've made way too many wrong turns into Jimmy Johns and not after I stayed up late making a darling quilt like that! Baby is darling and obviously loved...bed is made, quilt on it is super cute--quit being so hard on yourself. I have worn my yoga pants INTO work for two days in a row (more than once)- Keep smiling!!!!
Love it!
oh gosh I am not the only one with the huge gilt trip!!! Especially the teeth brushing bit... phew I am NOT alone!!!
I can add more to my list as well but the sun is SHINING and the children are having a good day - why spoil it?
This post made my day! I think we all struggle with balance sometimes. I say this in my yoga pants - which I have worn for 2 days in a row, no less - so I'm right there with you. Your baby and quilt are beautiful, and it is more important for kids to grow up realizing that adults have dreams too, and that they don't have to wait for the perfect moment to work toward them, as to have a grapeless floor.
So funny, your guilt list sounds exactly like mine!!!! I would have to add that I spend way too much looking at fabric online and not enough time actually sewing the fabric I have... you're much more productive than I am!
And I so wish we had a Jimmy John's close. I'd have to drive 45 minutes away, not sure I could blame that on a wrong turn!! ;)
It's not your fault!! Jimmy Johns will do that to ya!
I could tick off just about everything on your list! And yes, sometimes I feel guilty too especially when I sew or sit on the computer for too long instead of doing the housework. What is Jimmy Johns, I am intrigued as we don't have that in Australia. The quilts are gorgeous, I am hankering to buy some of that DS fabric, I think I love everything she does.
Your children are loved, fed, and obviously happy. If you manage more than that in the course of a day, it's all gravy. Give yourself a break. Guilt makes wrinkles and ulcers and takes time away form the important things like being happy.
The grape kicking cracks me up! I love your honesty.
I love the grape comment! I remember one time I was trying to talk on the phone while my then toddler son was destroying the house. It was an important phone call so I literally got a piece of bologna out of the refrigerator and threw it like a Frisbee to him just to occupy him for 2 more minutes. Good times. Hang in there and you're right, don't sweat the small stuff.
Seriously...kicking the grape, that's funny stuff! I love your blog and love your quilts...and your honesty...thanks for taking the time you do with your quilts for others to enjoy them, I really do appreciate it! (And so does my technologically-challenged mom every time she comes over).
I LOVE yoga pants -- SOoooo comfy! Kids need Mom/play dough time too. Enjoy it. They'll be gone before you know it. And focus on what you accomplished, not what you didn't do. Your quilt is wonderful. Darling baby too.
Wow ! Your guilt list sounds exactly like mine! When you discover the secret to not sweating the small stuff please bottle it and send me some. I drive myself crazy with the guilt voices in my head.
Confession: I spend all weekend in my pyjamas. I'd wear them to work but my boss wont let me. Yes-I've asked! Over on the other side of the world is someone slacker than you...take heart in this knowledge.
Apart from the fabulous quilts, we could have been separated at birth - it was like reading my own day!!
OK I also put my PJs on when the kids do, and ate too much Easter chocolate instead of lunch, so I think we are evens!
If your husband isn't complaining and the kids aren't complaining, don't sweat the small stuff. About the grapes? I have kicked a few under the stove!
So good to know there are people who worry about the same thing as me!
That list made me laugh (only because I can relate), I just love the grape comment:) Thanks for the laugh and good for you!!
Beautiful quilt top:)
Take it from a pro, guilt is very over-rated!
You just returned from a relaxing vacation, ease back into life:)
You made me laugh I signed up at a weight loss clinic today and once I left there promply went to the take away shop for some hot chips for lunch followed by Easter Egg afternoon tea...
I am guilty... Diet starts next Wednesday.
A grape under the fridge eventually becomes a raisin. Think of it as a science lesson for the kids. Early on in my marriage when we still only had one child and the second one started I told my husband that I wasn't a housewife, I was a SAHM. I would make sure there was always good food on the table (with a few nights off for good behaviour!) and that we always had clean clothes to wear. ANYTHING else was a bonus. We all need to put less pressure on ourselves and find the joy in the things we do - loving our kids, quilting, life. The dusting will still be there tomorrow. Is it really that important?
Thanks for the post! I feel the same way sometimes. I just had baby #3 four months ago and still weigh 20 pounds more than I did after baby #2. I keep telling myself today will be the day I get the diet under control...so TODAY will be that day! Thanks!
I'm cracking up about kicking the grape under the fridge, sounds like something I would do :)
Love this quilt top you completed... I think I'd like to make one. Lets add it to the never ending list of "would love to do" quilts :)
You poor thing! When my kids were younger, and at the point I was like this the worst, all three of my boys were under the age of 5 because I was blessed with twins. It took awhile for me to stop feeling like this myself. I also had the added stress of the fact that I'd kicked their dad out so it was me and the three boys. Then one day I decided, like you to change and then started trying to tell myself daily, or ask myself rather...... 'will this REALLY be a big deal in 5 years?'. if you can honestly answer yes to that question then deal with those things. All other things are just not worth the stress you are adding to your life so do them, or don't do them and then move along and enjoy the kids.
The playdough thing and the grape comment made me laugh. I'm sorry. :) You might want to get that grape out of there though. You know that will get really icky under there right? LOL
Sounds like you just had a down day. Sorry to hear. Call a girlfriend, take the kids to the park (weather permitting) or go to an indoor playland and chat. When my girls were young (youngest is now 14), socializing with a girlfriend really helped when I was in a slump.
Today will be a better day! The quilt is lovely! Beautiful job and colors.
Rain, rain, rain and possibly snow (unbelieveable for here this time of year) here in Minnesota. Where is spring??
Love your blog!
Meg
Oh i have two little ones (5 and 2) and I sweat the small stuff like this all the time, but the truth of the matter is that sometimes I get all ADHD and just can't help it:) And then I promise myself I will do better and I do for about a week...lol. Then I am back at my craziness again:) Glad to know I am not alone!
I love, love, love this post! I believe I have had every single "small stuff" cross my brain at one point or another, and I will have a whole 'nother list for today. Thank you for sharing the regular normal stuff of your life.
Yes, we all need some clear head space! Love the quilt top you made last night and also the quilt in the top photo.
You're right, it's not worth worrying about the small stuff. Concentrate on your family and friends and the things you love to do, and let the rest go. The quilt is beautiful and love the red/white polka dot. Did you not use the 2 polka dot fabrics in the DS line?
Holy awesome quilt top!! It is beautiful!
(( HUGS)) and the quilt is lovely!!!
Walk to the nearest window. Look outside. Is the Earth still rotating on its axis? If so, it's all going to be ok. I love your quilt!
You just made my day. I love when people admit their imperfections, especially when they are exactly like mine! I think I snorted a little when I read about the grape. It is like we were separated at birth!
Wow. That is a lot of baggage to handle. Looks like you are just a plain old human mom. Who has inspired me greatly in the past few weeks. I love reading your blog don't mess that up heheheh. Thanks a bunch..
Those wrong turns into Jimmy Johns can get'cha everytime :P
And don't forget the one thing that makes all the small stuff leave your mind the easiest...happy kids :)
Why do you think I don't want my hubby to move the refrigerator? Everyone kicks stuff under there - most of them just don't admit to it! Put your kids in the quilt pics, then you kill two birds with one stone. If God didn't want us to eat out, he wouldn't have made so many restaurants. Throw the Play-Do away - you'll be happier, and they'll never miss it! (I hate that stuff - messy and smelly! But it does keep the kids occupied for hours...) Don't sweat the small stuff - and it's all small stuff!! PS Yoga pants are so-o-o-o-o-o comfortable, aren't they? lol
Well top o' the mornin' to you me dear!
May I ask ye a question... are ya' braggin' or complainin'? I ask cause, I'm not seein' anything too different from the rest of the western worlds' occupants in a single thing you've said. Ceptin' fer the fact, that yer the one who completed a lovely wee quilt top!! :}
Now go on with ye me duck; go kick some more fruit and hug those wee bairns.
Give yourself a break Allison, you are only human. A young mother with a home, husband, two small children and a burning desire to create. You are doing just fine, in fact I think you are better than great!
P.S. Yoga pants are a girls best friend.
Oh man, I fee ya on the guilt trips! Once, I was having a bad morning so I declared it a yoga pant day, which instantly took the pressure off. My husband came home that night and as I was telling him about me and my toddler's awesome "screw it, we're in sweats" time, it dawned on me that my Ben was supposed to go to the dr.'s that day for an allergy test. yikes! apparently my brain requires that I button pants to activate. So kudos to you for being able to wear yoga pants and still have the mental wherewithal to raise adorable babies and make beautiful quilts!
Quilting aside - your stuff is always beautiful - thanks for the post about small stuff. I totally needed that! Have a good, 'non-sweaty' day:-)
Allison-This is so great to read today! My brother in law just moved in with my husband and I and we live in a pretty small space so the "little" things seem to be magnified by ten. Like clothes being dumped on a bed unfolded, dishes sitting in the sink, the breaker that feeds my sewing machine being tripped every time the ac kicks in. Really it's not that big of a deal. A pain sure but not that big of a deal in the overall scheme.
If you ever figure out how to stop those lists from popping into your head all the time - PLEASE share! :)
i LOVE that you kicked the grape under the fridge! if we took the time to make our homes perfect, we would be picking up, cleaning, straightening ALL DAY LONG. who wants to do that!#??$
i love your quilt! i am thinking that i will make a bow tie quilt with my DS. have always wanted one of those!
Haha, I love this one, "There was grape on the floor and instead of bending over to pick it up…I kicked it under the fridge" We've all done that! Well, I have anyway :)
that was a funny list!!! i use up too much time worrying about that stuff too. i love the quilt top. it has been ages since i stayed up to make something.
I LOVE that quilt. Maybe today I will make the test block(s) for the one I want to make...you might have inspired me a little bit. Or if I don't, maybe I will at least make that trip to the library I've been putting off. :) No guilt here...haha
My favorite was the grape under the fridge! I literally laughed outloud! Here's to shaking off the little stuff. I totally need a lesson for that one too. High on my list right now, I can't believe I didn't actually get that fabric in the mail to her. (Sorry about that, by the way. Let me know if you still need it!)
Your quilt looks great!!
Not sure where this came from, but my friend always quotes: "You will never have enough time to do everything, but you will always have time to do what is most important. Your job is to figure out what that is."
You are not alone girlfriend!!! I don't always brush my son's teeth twice a day like I should always;) My son watches too many cartoons too, but as long as I get him outside for an hr a day he will be fine (I hope;) We are women and moms and we feel everything ya know!
I laughed out loud when I read "There was grape on the floor and instead of bending over to pick it up…I kicked it under the fridge." That cracked me up because it sounds like something I would do! I know you're not complaining, just venting. Have a great day and thanks for letting me know that I'm not alone either!
i actually laughed at your comments. i probably thought half of those yesterday also. the grape kicking was the best! love, love, love that quilt top you stayed up finishing. i purchased one of those fabrics at joann's and am kicking myself for not getting more of that line. {sure it's all gone...}
Good to know there are others out there like me :)
Your quilt turned out so cute. And the cutie in the laundry basket just accented it. Is it one of your patterns?
Your list really made me laugh as it could have been me talking. =) I have four little ones so have quite a few days/weeks like that. Things are gettign easier as the baby gets bigger so there is hope! My baby is 4 months now. Love your quilts. I am working on one kind of like your skipping stones for our King sized bed!
Life's too short--be a hedonist! And your quilt top looks fab--I have to think of something so I can get cutting into my DS fabric.
So refreshing to hear the realities of life. Those days are long past for me but if I learned anything it is that your kids will be grown and gone before you can blink. Treasure every moment - playdough and all. Just think that someday the "don't sweat the small stuff" could be piercings or blue hair. You have found the secret - "Do what you love and love what you do". Your quilts are beautiful, your children are happy and healthy, and the grape under the fridge is insignificant.
I'm going to be 63 in a week and I often think I could have done better as a Mom and wife but I think as women we all think like that. Remember children will not remember how clean your house is or what they ate, but how much time you spent with them. So enjoy your life and have fun and all will fall into place. Your quilt is just wonderful.
You need a dog.
Then you would never kick a piece of food under any kitchen appliance, ever again!
A dog will smell that one tidbit and will not abandon that tidbit until said tidbit is in dog's mouth. Needless to say, it is clean under my fridge and oven at all times!
Now, about the paperwork stacked on my desk, in my bedroom, in my spare roomm.....maybe I will sew just a little little bit first...
Ahh! Your post made me feel so much better about sucking at life. Now I know that I am not alone!
i am lovin' that quilt, oh yes i am!!! so delightful it is!! and, the pattern woould be?
skippin' squares? yes? i have the fabric. i have the pattern. guess i'm good to go!! ( i love that you kicked that grape under the fridge! thought i was the only one that would ever do such a thing! but, unlike me, i bet you get that grape out BEFORE it becomes a raisin!! or before you move~ whichever comes first~~)
Like a lots of comments I love the grape comment - I have been known to do similar things (just don't tell my hubby, who's under the illusion I'm a great housewife LOL). Why do we all do the guilt thing? It's pointless isn't it? So good on you for taking a 'non-guilt' day. And gorgeous quilt top, sewing is definitely better than cleaning in my opinion :)
Well the better know quote is...“Rule number one is, don't sweat the small stuff. Rule number two is, it's all small stuff.” ~ Robert Elliott But I like this one too... "Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths." ~Etty Hillesum
Thanks for sharing your "silly thoughts". :0)
didn't feel sorry for you, laughed with you. as a mom of grown children.. none of this will matter. loved children, that will matter! LOVE cluck cluck sew!!! quilts are magnificent!!
when I "forget" stuff or do something too much ie. tv... My motto is "at least no one got hurt"!
Love the pictures :)
Hi Lee.
It's very nice that you have prepared the top and the baby is gorgeous photo, I also want to have one so handsome!
I became your fan a few weeks ago, very nice work to get on the blog.
Greetings from Granada, Spain, from espiralcaracola.blogspot.com
Hee-hee! I love the grape under the fridge comment... and the tooth brushing admission!! So nice to know I'm "normal".....
Super awesome post! I had to straight out cackle about the grape under the fridge. Love your work and am hoping to get one of those sprocket pillows stitched up this week!
Enjoy your day!
So glad to know that I am not the only one who has kicked something under the fridge just so I didn't have to send down.
Ha ha - I laughed at the grape kicking...not that I've ever done that :-)
I hear ya...it's easy to get bogged down by those little nagging thoughts -we all do! That quilt is so pretty!!
I subscribe to the theory that "Guilt is the result of protecting an illusion we have about ourselves". As soon as I accept that I AM the sort of person who kicks grapes under the fridge/wears yoga pants all day for several days in a row/doesn't brush my childs teeth every night/etc. the guilt goes away. Accepting that we aren't perfect can be uncomfortable but it is freeing! Now go love those babies and stop worrying about the rest it will still be there tomorrow. Trust me I know!!
Grapes, teeth, veggies, drive thru!!! I love it! Are you me? At least you can quilt. Beautifully! I need a hobby.
Girl, I so "get" you! Been there, done that! Don't do it anymore. Love your blog!
Oh man. Jimmy Johns is my one true weakness. I TOTALLY understand how you feel about that one.
Love your quilt by the way, I can't wait to get started sewing with my DS Quilt fabric!
Oh me oh my! I feel like you do! I have too many days where I am worrying about things that I have wasted too much time! Good luck with all your thoughts, now for me to get back to my worries! Love the quilt top!
Don't tell me you're only suppose to wear yoga pants while doing yoga. oops. And you didn't just kick a grape under the fridge, you were making raisins. A healthy snack for the kids later on. Great post.
Beautiful quilt top!! My brain space is wasted on such silly things as well. I guess life is life even when we wish it was really a movie. :) :) :) I love hearing all the imperfections everyone else has too, makes me feel less sad that none of my clean laundry is put away, like ever. :)
Cheers!
Rachel

Kindred spirits! You make me feel like I'm not alone in making similar promises of eating better, exercising more, spending less money, etc. thanks for your honesty. Love your quilts. They are always inspiring and beautiful. Keep up the energy on things that matter like the creativity you continue to show on your site.
I *LOVE* that you keep it real! Housework be damned! ;) lol! Love the quilt top...it's gorgeous!
I love this post and I love your new DS quilt top. That fabric is the bomb and your quilt is even better. :)
You are extremely talented and from what I can see, appear to be a really amazing mom. So don't sweat the petty stuff. Life is too short. Btw you are not complaining. Just speaking your mind as always which I love hearing! :D
That quilt top is awesome and done in record time. It was just a stack of fabric on Monday! I envy your progress. Seems like I've been staring at the same fabric for months.
Ps What's a Jimmy Johns? I don't even know what it is, but from reading this post and some of the comments I want it.
I can totally relate to this post!! Nice to know I am not the only one who feels this way sometimes!
Shanna
Just very small stuff that only seems to bother you if you let it certainly nothing to sweat about. you appear to be a good mom & you need to consider that when your boys are all grown up they're certainly not going to judge you on any of that or especially say that you were not a good mother because of all that you listed & yada yada yada ...... You do inspire me ~ what a great quilt!!
Penny
Love love your quilt. I love your blog and my daughter who is learning to quilt loves it also. You are such an inspiration to others who want to learn to quilt, but don't know where to start. I am using your blog as I have to teach a quilt class in RS. You have so many great ideas. I tell everyone that you are the best blog for quilters that want to learn. We all have guilty feelings now and again, but our love for others and our children will always be remembered, not if there is a grape under the fridge.
Ronda
Okay! First of all, brenda's comment? HILARIOUS!!! She needs to comment more often because between your posts and her comment, they could actually keep me laughing longer than I ever thought! And the grape? Let's just say you did it out of pure instinct to save your little Jack's life because grapes are toxic for doggies. And taking the wrong turn into Jimmy Johns? Is that ever a wrong turn? You know, I've been taking lots of wrong turns into taco bell lately...so it could be worse!
what a great new quilt! love the DS line with all that white - looks wonderful!!
Your quilt top is to die for! Wish I could make something that pretty in the same amount of time. Unfortunately, I am a slow joe when it comes to quilting and life in general. As for your thoughts, you are not alone. I think we all have those thoughts from time to time. Just part of life. Take care.
Makes me feel better knowing Im not the only one. :)Its really not worth the time to fret over it! :)
Allison, the quilt top is beautiful, and so is your son. Perspective, my dear. Just keep it all in perspective. :)
You have me ROFL'ing!! Last saturday, I didn't get up until 2pm. Then I never bothered to get out of my pj's, I just sewed and sewed with the TV on of course. If I had had any grapes on my floor, I bet I would have pretended not to see it and hoped my husband would. I really love your quilt, especially since I have a pile of Pips and DS fabrics waiting to be a quilt.
That quilt top was definately worth staying up late for! And, I don't feel sorry for ya but I do "get" what your saying...good luck on letting some that little stuff go :)
GIRLFRIEND! Seriously I think I may have done ALL of the same things this week. Thanks for your blog, I love reading it and getting inspiration! Been following a few months now. Love your style! Trying to get my own going...
mrsquilty.tumbler.com
good idea with the grape. i will have to try that sometime ;)
I just have to say that I'm fretting that my Jimmy Johns doesn't have a drive-thru. SERIOUSLY!! I would eat there everyday if I didn't have to get out of my car to get my sandwich. :) I Love it!!
what a grand title for a lovely post. I adore the newest quilt. I hope to make something out of the fabric I have from this line.
Hahaha, I do the same thing! It's the Super Woman complex. I think it's just in our nature to try and do it all. Even when we can't do it all and don't feel guilt about, we still make mental notes about it :)
love all your quilts! would love to win your fabric giveaway. you are a very inspiring quilter
Check out www.e-mealz.com Best $5 a month I could spend! They've done all the work for me!
You are so inspiring!
Such a normal, down to earth woman and mum - congrats.
We all sweat the small stuff and from over here in Australia, thanks for keeping it real :-)
holy cow, I almost died when you said you'd kicked a grape under the fridge. Bahahahaha! Awesome! I think we've all been there in one form or another. My house is a total disaster and it has been for a week now, although right now it's a different kind of disaster because I'm taking a break in the middle of spring cleaning and reorganizing. But the laundry in the basket beside me? that's been in my livingroom for at least three days now. If I could choose just one task to pay somebody to do for me... it would be folding and putting away my laundry.
OK, the grape, the teeth brushing and Jimmy Johns cracked me up!!! Too funny. :)
