I always have mixed feelings after Christmas…the past month was especially crazy with my husband Graduating, family get-togethers, traveling, and lots of To Do’s…so its hard to switch gears and get into slow down mode. Yesterday I took Ben downtown to paint a piggy bank…and broke out a new rotary cutter:
After a couple of practice cuts I’m in love. You hold in the handle gently and the blade pops out…and the handle locks to keep it away from little hands. I constantly forget to pull my blade back in on my old one…so it will be one less thing for me to think about! I bought mine at Joann’s during the sales. Hope you had a Merry Christmas!

That is why we all look forward to a "New Year"! It is so we can reflect and get geared back up! Piggy Banks rotary cutters and all a good nite! Refresh and take a breath! Kim C
That is the same cutter I bought when i first started quilting. I used it exclusively until last year when they came out with the one that has a two piece slide cover. Now I can make a few short cuts left handed.
New tools are so fun, yes?
Congrats! I love this cutter, it's my favorite. I do like the one Debbie M spoke about. Once in a while I need to do a leftie cut. Happy New Year! Can't wait to get my new/your new patterns.
I have the same cutter and thought it would be safe, but my 15-month old has learned how to push the button to release the safety. Luckly nothing has happened yet, but just be forwarned ;)
I know exactly what you mean about switching gears; everything happens so quickly I want to take it all in.
The little piggy bank is just adorable. My daughter painted one just like that for me for mother's day and it says "quarters for quilting".
I have a rotary cutter just like this and LOVE it!
I understand completely. I teach dance for a living and this is my last break until after our recital in June. That's a long time.... And I hate Christmas ending, its such a happy time of year!
Hope you get a chance to relax a bit and play with your new toy :o)
That's my favorite rotary cutter. I hope your holidays were merry and your new year will be bright and shiny...how much longer for that new baby to arrive?
I have that one as well and I love it! I now have trouble using the other kind that stays open. Excellent purchase!
I had to get a new one last month...finally after eight years. You are right...the new ones are so much better!

Thats the only cutter I have ever had for many years now. I love it and have had no reason to replace it. Perfect size and fit for my hand with the added bonus of the retractable blade. Nice choice!
your blog is amazing!!! ;o i found it by pinterest and im in love! :o
Thats the same rotary cutter I have! I first loved Olfa during college (architecture models) and figured I'd stick with the brand when I took up a new hobby.
I've been wanting one of those ~ recently I was holding mine and swiped a tendril of hair out of my face and cut myself on the cheek! It wasn't a bad cut, but it could have been!
It's nice to slow down after a hectic wonderful holiday!
i love new rotary cutters. they cut so clean and fast. that is the cutter i have and i love it.
This was the rotary cutter "they" told me to buy, and I did, and boy, am I glad I listened. I've had it for almost 10 years now, and I must be on my 4th or 5th blade, but not ONCE have I had one of those accidental cuts I keep hearing about...you know, the ones that bring tears....and the red stuff that's not licorice.
I simply LOVE my rotary cutter. When I went to my first "learn to quilt 101" class, they told me the first three rules of quilting - retract the blade x 3. I was soooooo confused! I had no clue there was any other sort besides the one I have & love!
That's the one I have, I think.... does it have the easy blade removal feature? I love that!!! Happy Holidays Allison!!!
My four year old nephew figured out how to open and close it, and thought it was similar to the dull pizza cutter his mom lets him play with and he sliced his finger wide open trying to make the wheel spin. Now it's under lock and key with the rest of the knifes and sharp scissors.
Piggy bank painting looks like a great way to slow down :) Enjoy the pace and have a happy new year!
It's hard to slow down. And it's hard to gear back up. I love the Christmas break off of school but at the same time I hate it. We went to a painting studio this week that had that same piggy bank, and I rand into a quilting lady who is doing an amazing freehand design on it. Can't wait to see her finished project. Happy New Year!
During the move, i packed stuff and have been using another, found this the other day and remembered why its my favorite! Love your pretty blog
I've got the same cutter and I love it. I've been using it for years. Love the lock feature too. Mine is stored on top of the fridge so it is handy to have it locked... just in case.
Happy New Year!
Yes! Another vote for the awesomeness of that rotary cutter here. I love mine! So much better than having to remember to retract the blade manually!
